Food bills are climbing again and at the fastest rate we’ve seen in a year and a half.

The latest BRC figures show prices for everyday essentials like chocolate, butter and eggs have surged, pushing overall food inflation up to 4.2% in August – the highest since February. That’s up from 4% last month.

Bosses warn this latest spike piles even more pressure on families already battling the cost-of-living squeeze.

Fresh food is also getting pricier, with inflation jumping to 4.1% thanks to soaring dairy costs – up sharply from 3.2% in July.
