BBC boss Tim Davie resigns over Trump documentary edit

James O’Brien breaks down the controversy over the BBC’s edited Trump clip in their 2024 Panorama documentary.

He argues that the real scandal isn’t the edit, but the way it’s being used to distract from ‘Donald Trump’s incitement of the January 6th insurrection.’

The BBC director general, Tim Davie, and head of news, Deborah Turness, resigned on Sunday night after accusations that the corporation was failing in its duty of impartiality.

The chair of the board, Samir Shah, has since apologised for the way in which the speech by the US president was edited.

The show is one of a number of examples highlighted by Michael Prescott, a former external adviser to the BBC’s editorial standards committee, who detailed his concerns about the broadcaster’s impartiality in a memo published by the Telegraph.
