Though initially eliminated in Canada in 1998, measles is making a comeback and the country has officially lost its measles elimination status. Outbreaks have been happening in under-vaccinated and unvaccinated communities in multiple provinces. In 2025 alone, more than 5,000 cases were reported nationwide – the majority being in Alberta and Ontario. Touria Izri explains the resurgence of the highly contagious virus and why it matters.
