Rochdale grooming gang ringleader Shabir Ahmed has been released from prison, prompting a heated exchange in the House of Commons and fresh calls for him to be deported to Pakistan.
During the Commons exchange, an MP described Ahmed as a joint UK-Pakistani national and said he “should be deported to Pakistan”. He urged the Home Office and Foreign Office to do everything possible to ensure victims “never ever get to face” him again.
The Leader of the House responded by saying the Government is exploring every option in the case. She said perpetrators of grooming gangs and sexual abuse must face “the full force of the law”, and warned that Ahmed would be “locked up again immediately” if he breaches the strict conditions placed on him.
Ahmed’s release has reignited debate over grooming gang convictions, victim safety, deportation powers, release conditions and whether serious offenders with dual nationality should be removed from the UK after serving prison sentences.
