The Netherlands has no mountains, no major mines and almost no reason to build gigantic trucks. Yet this small, flat European country became home to some of the most extraordinary heavy transport machines ever created.
Dutch engineers have built trucks capable of hauling enormous industrial loads, mining vehicles weighing nearly 100 tonnes, modular transporters that have moved almost 12,000 tonnes on wheels, and giant cranes designed to lift thousands of tonnes into the sky.
So how did Holland become one of the world’s greatest heavy-transport nations?
The story begins in 1928, when Hub van Doorne opened a small metalworking workshop inside a brewery in Eindhoven. Together with his brother Wim, he began developing lightweight welded trailers that eliminated the heavy riveted construction common at the time. That small workshop eventually became DAF, one of Europe’s most important truck manufacturers.
DAF’s obsession with getting maximum performance from minimum weight would define Dutch truck engineering for decades. The company moved into complete truck production after World War II, built its own engines and became an early European pioneer of turbocharged diesel technology. In 1973, the DAF 2800’s DKS 1160 brought commercial turbo-intercooling into the trucking world years before many European competitors adopted the technology.
But DAF was only the beginning. In the 1960s, the Floor family created Floor’s Truck Factory — FTF. Instead of mass-producing ordinary road trucks, FTF combined Detroit Diesel engines, Fuller transmissions, imported cabs and specially engineered Dutch chassis to create hand-built heavy-haulage monsters. Some were officially rated for gross train weights of up to 120 tonnes, while specialist accounts describe FTF combinations moving loads approaching 1,000 tonnes.
Then came GINAF. Beginning with converted surplus American military trucks, the Van Ginkel brothers developed increasingly specialised multi-axle machines for construction, quarries and extreme off-road conditions. One of the ultimate examples was the five-axle GINAF HD 5395 TS, a 10×6 mining dumper with a reported 610-horsepower Cummins engine and a gross vehicle weight of 95 tonnes.
But eventually, even gigantic trucks weren’t big enough.
Dutch heavy-haulage specialist Mammoet helped push transport beyond the limits of conventional tractor-and-trailer combinations. In 1983, Mammoet and Scheuerle co-developed the Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) — modular axle lines that could be connected together to create an enormous powered platform underneath virtually any load.
At the Port of Immingham in England, 426 synchronized axle lines transported an integrated offshore deck weighing approximately 11,727 tonnes. Thousands of tyres and hydraulically controlled suspension systems distributed the enormous load, creating what the documentary describes as the heaviest wheeled transport operation ever documented.
Mammoet’s giant ring cranes were designed to lift massive offshore and industrial structures into position, with its planned SK6000 promoted with a maximum lifting configuration of 6,000 tonnes. The documentary also examines the qualifications and contested claims surrounding its global ranking rather than simply accepting the marketing figures.
From DAF’s Eindhoven workshop and FTF’s hand-built Detroit-powered monsters to GINAF’s multi-axle giants and Mammoet’s enormous modular transporters, the Netherlands developed an engineering culture built around one idea:
This is the story of how a small, flat trading nation became one of the world’s great centres of trucking, heavy haulage and extreme engineering.
