Shabana Mahmood is facing widespread criticism over plans to house up to 900 migrants in Army barracks in Scotland and southern England, as part of a move to close around 200 asylum hotels.
The proposals, which would place 300 migrants at Cameron Barracks in Inverness and 600 at Crowborough Training Camp in East Sussex, have alarmed local residents, council leaders, and MPs who cite concerns over community impact, accessibility, and suitability.
The Scottish Government has also criticised the lack of Home Office engagement and called for financial support to manage services.
While ministers stress the barracks would be temporary, they have not set a timeline, arguing the approach may be costlier but could restore public confidence and serve as a deterrent compared with hotels.
The plan represents a significant policy shift for Labour, which previously opposed using large sites for asylum housing.
