LIVE: Keir Starmer Grilled at Prime Minister’s Questions

Sir Keir Starmer’s control over Labour has been significantly weakened after one of the party’s key backers at Unison elected a left-wing critic of the prime minister. Andrea Egan, a grassroots activist who has promised to review the union’s relationship with Labour, ousted the incumbent general secretary, Christina McAnea. Egan won almost 60 per cent of the vote compared with 40 per cent for McAnea and will take up her post in January.

Egan’s victory will deprive Starmer of crucial support on his party’s ruling national executive committee (NEC), a scenario described as an “utter disaster” by senior Labour sources.
