Two men accused of spying for China were alleged to have shared politically sensitive information with a Chinese intelligence agent over the course of about a year. Former parliamentary researcher Christopher Cash and his friend Christopher Berry denied passing any secrets, and the Crown Prosecution Service ultimately dropped the case in September.
The allegations suggested that information about the inner workings of the UK political system and the government’s stance on Chinese businesses was passed on and reportedly reached senior Chinese officials, including members of the Chinese Communist Party and the Politburo. The case raised questions over who knew what and when within government circles.
Separately, the Cabinet Office has rejected former adviser Dominic Cummings’s claim that China breached highly sensitive government systems in 2020. Cummings had said the breach involved so-called Strap material, the classification for the most secret intelligence, which he and the then-prime minister were allegedly informed about at the time.
