The cost of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s agreement on the Chagos Islands may be significantly higher than first projected, according to new analysis.
In August, the deal to maintain the UK-US military base in the Indian Ocean territory was estimated to involve £34.7bn in payments to Mauritius over the next 99 years.
However, the TaxPayers’ Alliance now suggests the figure could rise to £47bn across the same period. The group argues that government forecasts relied on an inflation rate of 2.3%, which it says is lower than current market expectations.
