West Midlands Police chiefs were questioned by MPs for almost two hours over the decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv away fans from attending Aston Villa’s Europa League match at Villa Park. Police repeated the ban was based on public safety, not politics, citing risks of disorder and hate crime linked to previous fixtures.
MPs challenged the reliability of intelligence the force said it received from Dutch counterparts after an Amsterdam match, including claims about the scale of Dutch policing. Chief Constable Craig Guildford said he stands by the integrity of his officers and denied figures were “made up”.
