The Government is preparing a major crackdown that will see valuables belonging to people who arrived in the UK illegally seized and sold to help pay for their accommodation costs.
Jewellery, watches, necklaces and chains — though not wedding rings — along with other high value items acquired in Britain such as cars and bikes, could be taken under the new plan aimed at tackling small boat crossings.
The measures would also apply to thousands of asylum seekers currently living in hotels who originally entered the UK legally but own assets such as vehicles.
