BBC Children in Need chairman Terry Duddy has resigned just weeks into his role after hitting a cyclist with his car, leaving the victim seriously injured. The June crash, caught on CCTV, showed Duddy’s BMW SUV collide with a female cyclist who had the right of way, throwing her across the road. Duddy, 69, was convicted of causing serious injury by careless driving, receiving an eight-month suspended sentence, 200 hours of unpaid work, legal costs, and an 18-month driving ban.
He informed the charity of his resignation immediately, which was accepted by the board, and trustee James Fairclough has taken over as chair. The incident adds to a series of controversies at the BBC this year, including the resignation of director Tim Davie over misleading edits of a Donald Trump speech.
