After this week’s GDP statistics, the UK can kind of boast the fastest growth in the G7 during 2025. It’s a bit like winning a beauty contest amongst your seven ageing friends, it doesn’t mean much. The bigger story is not so much a UK boom, growth in the past 12 months amounts to a paltry 1.2%, but a slowing global economy, hit by US tariffs, uncertainty and lower confidence. Also, if we compare growth for the past 12 months, which is a more useful guide, the UK is mid-table mediocrity amongst a pretty poor showing.
