The government will publish critical evidence in the China spying case that led to the collapse of the trial, Sir Keir Starmer has announced.
The prime minister told MPs that he had decided to publish three witness statements that were shared with prosecutors “in full” as he blamed the last government for the failed prosecution.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped charges against Christopher Cash, 30, a former parliamentary researcher, and Christopher Berry, 33, an academic, last month after saying the government had failed to provide a statement that “at the time of the offence China represented a threat to national security”.
In a statement at the start of prime minister’s questions, Starmer said the evidence that had been shared with prosecutors would be published in full after weeks of pressure on the government.
