Despite high-profile cases of bodies being left for weeks or even months, decomposing in unrefrigerated funeral parlours, continues to go unregulated.
Outside of Scotland, where a statutory code of conduct was introduced for funeral directors in March 2025, there is nothing compelling UK funeral directors to abide by any national standards.
They currently do not have to have any specific qualifications or even facilities like refrigeration to legally operate in England, Wales or Northern Ireland unless they pay to become members of trade bodies – the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) or the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF).
