Spain won the 2026 World Cup, but during the medal ceremony seven Spanish players appeared wearing six very different flags.
Gavi represented Andalusia. Dani Olmo wore Catalonia’s Senyera. Pedro Porro carried Extremadura, while Borja Iglesias represented Galicia. Yeremy Pino and Pedri both chose the Canary Islands flag, despite coming from different islands.
Álex Baena went even more local, wearing the municipal flag of his hometown, Roquetas de Mar.
So why did Spain’s World Cup winners choose these flags, and what do they reveal about regional and national identity within Spain?
