Rwanda could become the first country to act as a return hub for migrants attempting to reach the EU.
European countries including Italy are in talks with the African country after EU lawmakers paved the way for migrants to be sent to third countries.
In June, the European Parliament approved a new framework to allow ‘return hubs’ in third countries.
Rwanda already has the infrastructure needed to house migrants after a migrant deal with the UK was struck under its previous Conservative government. The agreement was shelved when Labour came to power in 2024 but now the new home secretary is also reconsidering reviving parts of the plan.
So, could Rwanda be the answer to Europe’s migration crisis?
